I am surprised at how much I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down.
I was completely surprised by the tone of the story and the direction of the plot -- I daresay that the description of the book given by the publisher is a bit misleading and makes it seem like a mindless teen romance where certain characters are just made for each other. However, it is neither mindless nor especially romantic.
What it is, is a powerful critique of the power struggles and gender roles in society, full of intelligent and unexpected twists. The tone of the book reminded me quite a bit of early Patricia Briggs, who is a master storyteller and world builder. Teens will identify with seventeen year old Noll, who is temperamental, selfish, and full of that teen feeling of "no one understands how I feel!" It makes her more human and I cheered for her.
I notice that this is listed as "Never Veil #1" and I am so hoping to see more of Noll.
