Kindred (Graphic Novel Adaptation)
by Octavia Butler
★★★★★

I was not able to put this book down.

I was completely engrossed by this tale of Dana, a modern Black American woman who is unexpectedly whisked into antebellum Maryland. There, Dana meets her ancestors -- the heir to the plantation and a freewoman he has forced into being his slave concubine.

This graphic novel does a magnificent job of portraying the complexity of human beings in evil situations. From the young slave owner who was a kind child but taught to be a monstrous adult, to the slave woman who abuses her fellow slaves to protect her family; people are complicated.

A powerful, emotional read -- highly recommended.

I have not read the novel version of Kindred, so I cannot speak to story's relationship to the original.
