As Dr. Smith travels to different places, taking tours, attending events, and doing interviews, he brings us alongside and talks us through his discoveries and how these experiences looking at the history and legacy of American chattel slavery affect him and those around him.

How the Word is Passed is not easy reading -- it's a tough subject matter. Yet the author writes with such deft and graceful prose (it's obvious he's a poet) that it allows your mind to better wrap itself around this difficult history and really reckon with it.
